Pimp My Book: Call of the Sea by Rebecca Hart

Welcome to Pimp My Book. Today, we have Rebecca Hart, an author of PNR magic. Her newest release, Call of the Sea, came out on June 21, 2012. She’s come here to give you a little insight on the novel.

I know several adults that read novels with young characters because the stories are woven well. In Call of the Sea, we get to see the main characters from their childhood to their journey into adulthood in a touch love story. I’ve read this novel in its infancy and Rebecca and I, along with some other friends in a very close-knit group, chuckle on why this has become a full fledged novel over the sampling it was supposed to be. Boy am I glad she didn’t skimp on the story! Plus, I love pirate stories!

Enjoy!

Thanks so much for having me on your blog, Pam. I’m over the moon excited to have a chance to “pimp” my debut novel, Call of the Sea. When I was cutting my teeth on short stories and getting publication credits in anthologies, I never thought I would be here pushing a bonafide novel. Just goes to show, you have to go where the story and the characters takes you.

As you know, the tale started out as a basic pirate story – a short for another anthology – and grew into what has become my first novel. Since its acceptance by fledgling publisher, Inkspell in December, I’ve been eating, sleeping and obsessing over what I hope reads like a swashbuckling pirate adventure, with some paranormal intrigue and romance tossed in for good measure. While Call of the Sea is an adult romance, the novel has a definite YA crossover appeal. That being said, please bear in mind there is one detailed sex scene and some “adult” themes.

BLURB: Elysandra Winters has always yearned for a life of adventure on the rolling seas and is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill her dream. When her Privateer father continually refuses to allow his only daughter to sail, Ellie defies him, disguises herself as a boy, and goes in search of a captain who will give her a chance to prove her worth.

Thanks to the cursed selkie blood coursing through his veins, Daniel O’Rourke needs the sea to survive. After giving up on his humanity and spending three years in seal form, he decides to give his human side another chance. Daniel goes in search of a job and a sense of normalcy, earning himself a position aboard Captain Winter’s ship, The Siren’s Call. However, his new captain’s first assignment has nothing at all to do with sailing, and everything to do with his headstrong young daughter.

Years later, when the leader of a band of bloodthirsty pirates murders Captain Winters, Daniel and Elysandra’s lives come crashing back together with the force of a hurricane. Both experts in deception, they must find a way to trust each other in order to quell the raging storm between them or have any hope of hunting down the captain’s killer.

EXCERPT:

Daniel searched his mind for the right words to explain away her doubt, but his oath stood in the way. She’d be devastated to know the man she looked up to her entire life traded guns to pirates, and he was barred from giving her the reason for it.

He gave his shoulders a nonchalant lift. “I went to see the general at The Bristol Inn this morning. I told him about our hold full of prisoners, where and how they were acquired. He agreed to come collect them.”

Ellie narrowed her eyes. “Why did he need to speak with you in private then?” She settled her hands on her hips, tapped her toe on the deck.

Her stance reminded Daniel of his mother when she’d caught him snagging biscuits from the tin before dinner. “He wanted a detailed account of what happened during the initial attack. I recalled the facts as I remembered them. He told me I would have to give testimony to the Magistrate in Truro before we sail and suggested the sooner I took care of my civic responsibility, the better.” Daniel relaxed his shoulders.

 Nicely done, O’Rourke.

Doubt still lingered in her eyes. “How long do you think that will take?”

“A coach leaves for the city every third day, but I’ve no idea which day this is on the cycle. I’ll have to check the schedule on the way home, but the trip itself will take two days each way, and probably a few days to file my testimony with the magistrate, assuming he’ll see me without an official appointment.” The more reasons he had to be away from her while he indulged his seal side, the easier it would be for him to keep his curse a secret. She couldn’t know the truth. He had no guarantees she would be as understanding about his deformity as her father had been.

Her teeth peeked out to nibble at her lip. “I can see to the repair work while you’re away. I’ve got a full week of sorting to do at Papa’s office, just to get to a place where I can try to organize the piles. Splitting time between the office and the ship shouldn’t be too troublesome. I’ll just tell Mama not to expect me home every night. There’ll be some nights where staying on the ship will be easier.”

Her easy acceptance of his lie sat in Daniel’s chest like a rock. He’d finally managed to wiggle his way past the protective walls she hid behind, if she learned of his deception, Ellie would lock him out forever. The boulder grew just a bit larger.
